Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Community Mobilization Project to Eradicate Female Genital Mutilation - Kenya

Development of community based programmes, including workshops and demonstrations to reduce the incidence of FGM.
Communication Strategies

District level teams are designing and implementing communication programmes to increase awareness of the harmful effects of FGM and to promote alternative rituals that retain the cultural significance of the practice while eliminating the physical and emotional trauma. Methods of communication include peer-to-peer outreach (girls, women, boys, and men), family life education through the schools, and media.
Development Issues

Women, rights, family planning, health, FGM, female genital mutilation, youth.
Key Points

By being flexible and building on each community's traditional practices, the project has been successful in providing a way for families to welcome their daughters into adulthood without circumcision. The MYWO project conducted quantitative and qualitative research in four districts of the country and disseminated the findings during a national workshop for representatives of government, non-government, and donor organizations.
