Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Africa Pulse - Southern African Development Community

Africa Pulse was an information gateway for the Civil Society sector in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The portal enabled organisations throughout the region to publish content directly on the Internet. Africa Pulse aimed not to re-represent already published material, but to provide a regional platform for issues and concerns that were not being voiced in the commercial or non-profit media. As one representative put it, the goal was "to encourage organisations, in the cities and rural areas, to tell their stories and to share their concerns".
Communication Strategies

Organisations, academics, journalists, researchers, activists, and unions freely published material that was relevant to the civil society sector on the Africa Pulse website. The site also had space for organisations to inform the sector about upcoming events and opportunities, such as protests, book launches, seminars, campaigns, and vacancies. Also offered was a database of websites searchable by category and country on topics including education, conflict and governance, and democracy and human rights.

A team of regionally based representatives based in Johannesburg provided editorial direction for the portal. Africa Pulse carried out online publishing and news writing workshops throughout South Africa.
