Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Participatory Documentaries - Kyrgyzstan

The project involved an innovatory process whereby ordinary people in two communities were enabled to express their views and problems in workshops and then on-air, thereby influencing the general public and policy-makers. The project introduced a new participatory methodology to programme making, changing old ‘Soviet style' broadcasting and enabled the communities in question to present their problems to the authorities by means of radio.
Communication Strategies

Two workshops in two different communities followed by the creation of four documentaries in each community about needy groups. Interactive radio documentaries were broadcast on state radio: Kyrgz Teleradio Corporation (KTC)
Development Issues

Democratic empowerment of ordinary people, problems of pensioners, children and young people, unemployed, refugees and rural women.
Key Points

The main innovatory aspect of the radio programmes was that they aired views from the ‘grassroots' by ordinary people, thus challenging the Soviet-style broadcasts of other Kyrgyz media which are usually dominated by experts and political leaders.
Partners

Department of Politiology of the Kyrgyz State National University (KSNU), International NGO working on community development, Counterpart Consortium.
