Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Working Together

Produced by ABC Ulwazi, Working Together is a 13-part radio drama series commissioned and funded by the Department of Labour. The series deals with the 2002 amendments to the labour laws in South Africa.
Communication Strategies

The format of the series is drama (varying between 6.5 to 8 minutes in length), followed by a short question-and-answer session between a labour department representative and the programme's narrator. The purpose of these sessions is to provide further clarity on those labour amendments highlighted in the preceding drama.

The "dramatisation of information" is a tested, internationally known technique for conveying abstract or difficult themes to a wide listenership by using the format of "soap opera" radio dramas.

This programme was broadcast on 20 community radio stations throughout South Africa.

Key Points

In 2002, specific amendments to the laws were dealt with, for example, those surrounding the dismissal of a worker on probation, the conciliation-arbitration process, and retrenchments.

Programmes funded by the South African Department of Labour explain the Labour Relations Act and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act in order to make people aware of worker and employer rights and obligations.
