Echonews-Schools – Nigeria
Echonews-Schools Edition is a newspaper that circulates free of charge in 500 secondary schools in Lagos State,Nigeria. It is a community newspaper project that aims to restore community journalism to Nigerian youth. The students write stories about happenings in their school for the newspaper.
Communication Strategies
The organiser says: "The Echonews project began from the secondary schools because, it is a community that is generally ignored by the mainstream media and has not acquired strong biases for products in the media market. Secondly, they are at a very experimental age and I believe it will be easier to introduce them to new ideas and make them better citizens."
The newspaper is distributed for free in 500 secondary schools in Lagos. Ten copies are delivered to each school and five copies are kept in the library. The first edition was called Echonews-Students Edition, but at a principals' conference held in January 2004, most present felt the project should embrace all members of the school community: students, teachers and principals. The name was then changed to Echonews-School.
