Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Mad Mundo

Produced by Article Z, an electronic media agency, Mad Mundo uses journalism and storytelling techniques via the mediums of television and the internet to explore the impact of globalisation on individual lives. Investigations by the journalists into personal stories help to introduce wider issues of globalisation, and are combined with interactive online discussions.
Communication Strategies
The strategy of Mad Mundo is to use personal, locally-driven stories and individuals' questions about the factors around them - international, political, trade and economic globalisation - that are having an effect on their lives, to lead to a greater investigation of those issues. Each story starts with one person, an ordinary citizen. The Mad Mundo team of investigators and journalists then investigate the issue raised, such as international finance, migration, and the fight against HIV/AIDS. The team then checks back with the individual, sharing what they have learned.

The idea behind the strategy was to create programmes in which the journalists are not only providers of information, but also provide a forum for citizens to interact with the world around them, defending their own rights.

The programmes will be broadcast on television, and each of the programmes are archived and may be viewed from the Mad Mundo website. The website also offers a forum for each programme that allows viewers to discuss and offer feedback on the segments.

Key Points
According to the project website, "changes on a global scale are having immediate consequences in our own personal worlds. Globalization and interdependance are no longer merely abstract notions: they are part of our lives, our homes, our cities and countries."
