Development Dialogue
Initiated by a group of former and present students of Development Communication at India's AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Development Dialogue is a series of monthly meetings that brings together professionals, students, academia, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) with the aim of strengthening the role of communication for positive social change. The meetings aim to provide an opportunity to share common interests, concerns, experiences, and contribute the ideas for each to benefit from each other's knowledge and experience.
Communication Strategies
The first meeting of the series took place in April 2006. This half day session, attended by students of development communication, sociology, social work, media professionals and teachers, was a focused consultation on the concept of development dialogue. Speakers discussed the importance of youth participation and how dialogue can help improve approaches to development.
The group plans to expand the initiative to other institutions and will encourage collaboration with governments, development organisations, educational institutions/communication institutes, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other stakeholders in formulating strategies to the common problems through application of appropriate mass communication. The group will aim to undertake activities to identify gaps and new opportunities, work towards effective and purposeful collaboration between policy makers, duty bearers, media professionals, NGOs, researchers etc.
It is planned that recommendations about the need to incorporate communication into development planning made by experts and working professionals in the meeting will be forwarded to the various stakeholders, policy makers and organisations implementing development projects. This aims to help in identify gaps and new opportunities and promote effective and purposeful collaboration. It also aims to advocate for policy changes in development programmes and course curriculum of development programmes to incorporate communication.
