Risks and Rewards: Stories from the Philippine Migration Trail
SummaryText
Some 7 million people from the Philippines can be found in more than 100 countries across all continents, making them one of most globalised peoples on earth. This collection of 36 news articles follows these Filipino workers across 13 countries in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. It explores the lives they build away from home, with a focus on reproductive health and sexuality.
The project began with a seminar for participating writer-fellows from East Asia and the Middle East, held in Bangkok, Thailand on February 22-23, 2000, to allow them to exchange ideas and discuss migration in Asia. Sixteen journalists from East Asia, and one from the Middle East (Lebanon) participated. Five resource persons from Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Hong Kong shared their insights on labour migration in the region, especially about women (who make up the majority of migrants) and reproductive health issues that workers face in the host countries.
The publication is part of a series on migration and reproductive health that Inter Press Service (IPS) (Asia-Pacific) is undertaking, with the support of the Ford Foundation. The stories aim to give a human face to migration, an issue often viewed and discussed in the media as solely a labour matter.
