Teachers Net - East Africa
"The intention is to create a virtual platform for exposure and exchange of information. The portal should-- through links -- provide information about the institutions, the programmes on offer, new projects and any other information that is of concern to the targeted educational institutions and their target groups."
The objectives of the web portal are:
- to create a virtual network for all teachers' colleges in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda;
- to promote the use of internet in teachers' colleges in the described sub-region;
- to share information on ICT projects and resulting active learning strategies in the institutions;
- to serve as a "meeting place" for discussions among the members;
- to serve as a platform for the offering of on-line and /or distant learning courses; and,
- to create a convenient space where educational institutions can market their programmes.
The site was developed to network all teacher training colleges in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda as part of establishing a site that would include all educational institutions in Eastern Africa.

Teachers are not only leaving government services for private schools, but for parastatal and private companies. Teachers receive housing and transport allowances but these are too inadequate to compensate.

I think is a particularly interesting initiative, in light of the common perception that there has been little progress in applying ICTs to education and other developmental processes.
My organisation - United Nations University Institute for New Technologies - recently completed a survey of Internet use (for research purposes) among university lecturers in Kenya and Nigeria, which found that costs still inhibit access to online learning materials.
I am therefore very keen to follow the progress of this project and to see if the concept is picked up by other institutions.
