Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Watoto Child Care Ministries

Watoto Child Care Ministries is a child sponsorship programme designed to address the needs of Uganda's orphans. The project is targeted towards meeting the academic and spiritual needs of Ugandan orphans and encouraging children through singing in a choir. Its goal is to provide spiritual, physical, educational and emotional care for every child. Watoto means "the children".
Communication Strategies
The project has its own children's villages that consist of several single family dwellings constructed to provide shelter for eight children and a housemother. The organisation aims to give each child is given the opportunity to become a unique individual. The children's development is dependent upon love, care and spiritual discipleship given by housemothers.

Every week, women from the local ministry visit the home to deliver food, encourage the mothers and provide attention to the children. Men also visit the children regularly, providing prayer and family devotions, arranging sporting activities and special outings for the children. Weekly Bible clubs are held at each home. Children from the neighborhood are invited to join Watoto for a activities, including singing, Bible stories, games and crafts. Watoto also assists relatives who care for parentless children in their extended families by providing education, clothing and food.

Since 1994, the organisation has run the Watoto Children's Choir which tours globally. Accompanied by a small team of adults, Watoto's performances are a blend of native African rhythms, contemporary gospel music and ethnic dance. The choir offers the children who sing in the choir an opportunity to express their identity as children who have lost their parents to AIDS and to express the hopes they have for their lives. Videos, DVDs, CDs and cassettes of their recordings are available on their website.

The home offers opportunities for volunteers from around the world who wish to visit them and participate in building and other forms of practical assistance.
