Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Antenne-CDN - Canada

This radio magazine programme focuses on community groups active in addressing the issues that plague Côte-des-Neiges (CDN) district (the neighbourhood around and below the University of Montréal), which is populated with poor people from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
Communication Strategies
Antenne-CDN is broadcast live from 10 to 11 AM EST every Wednesday morning live from Montréal. Each show consists in a longer in-studio interview (10:05 to 10:40-45) with musical interludes, usually instrumental jazz or ethnic songs (Haitian Kompa, Brasilian samba, African folk-songs, Steel Drums). This portion of the programme is followed by a shorter phone-in interview that lasts less than ten minutes or the reading of announcements that include job offers, the implementation of new programmes, calls for demonstrations, or invitations to conferences.

One programme (broadcast on October 30, 2002), for example, focused on the not-for-profit NGO BAOBAB Familial, which seeks to deal with and seek a solution to CDN's problems by helping young immigrants find employment, and adjust to the language, among other efforts. Two volunteers were interviewed as part of the in-studio portion of the programme. In all programmes, listeners are reminded of the importance of their active involvment in, or contribution to, projects of social change.

Both the programme itself and the website describing it (CISMFM site) are in French. Visitors to the site may listen to previously broadcast magazine programmes or to the live programme on Wednesday mornings.

Key Points
Communication du Versant Nord (CISM), a non-profit media project organised by students at the University of Montréal, conducts this radio programme. CISM brings the efforts of volunteers to light, allows students the chance to gain experience in media work, and brings new talent to the airwaves.
