Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Labor News Production - South Korea

Founded in 1989, Labor News Production (LNP) is an NGO that creates and disseminates educational videos to support the development and growth of the independent & progressive labor movement in Korea.
Communication Strategies

Their main focus is to communicate information and analysis of labor issues to workers and union activists through the use of video. LNP is an ‘alternative media' source and alternative distribution system in a country where the government very closely controls the mass media. Their productions use a variety of styles including cinema verite, reportage, animation and music video. LNP also has a video production training programme for workers and other non-professionals. Labor News video editions include 6 regular columns or sections. LNP has produced 30 stand-alone features or documentaries. They have also recorded all the main events - conferences, meetings, demonstrations, strikes, etc. - throughout the Korean Labor movement.
Development Issues

Rights, education, political development.
Key Points

LNP strives to create a sense of common purpose amongst relatively diverse unions. Unions sought an independent visual medium(video) that stood in counterpoint to the commercial and government controlled news agencies that were distorting the unions' message to the broader public and even their own membership. Also, union leaders understood the power of the moving image to promote the exchange of information and spark discussions in their educational activities. The decision to move from film to video also allowed LNP's images to be easily reproduced for dissemination in a wide variety of venues (ie: public halls, private homes).
Partners

LNP is a member of Videazimut, a global federation of individuals and organisations working to advance democratic communication and democracy through audiovisual technologies.
