Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Lakas Kabataan - Tinig Kabataan: Recharged! (LKTKR)

"Lakas Kabataan - Tinig Kabataan: Recharged!" (LKTKR) is a youth-oriented, on-air venue for Filipinos that uses the medium of radio to support youth advocacy. A programme of Radyo Uno DZME 1530 kHz, created in partnership with Voice of the Youth (VOTY) Network, LKTKR aims to be an entertaining, invigorating programme that allows young broadcast talents and youth advocates to spotlight Filipino young people's achievements and productive involvement in society - as well as to explore the political and social issues affecting their lives.
Communication Strategies
Airing on DZME 1530 kHz Saturdays from 12:00 - 1:00 PM, this youth advocacy radio programme is designed to inspire, inform, and involve Filipino youth. The participation of youth media-makers is key; LKTKR is entirely conceptualised and spearheaded by youth advocates seeking to create an intelligent, informative, and fun programme through the following segments:
  • Voice Out! - 15 minutes of interactive talk about current national issues and events that occurred the past week. Aside from promoting awareness and critical thinking, it aims to encourage youth to voice their opinions and take a stand. Through discussion of topics such as volunteerism, empowerment, leadership, and participation, Voice Out aims to serve as a help line for kids and teens seeking to communicate about their real-life issues and to motivate them to find their own advocacy-related "cause".
  • Bilib Kami Sa'Yo! - 15 minutes dedicated to giving recognition to youth leaders and achievers who could inspire other young people in discovering their talents and realising their dreams.
  • Join Ka Dito! - 15 minutes featuring active youth organisations from schools and private and government sectors. By highlighting publications, school groups, and teams that are led by young people, this segment enables youth to promote their cause and encourages youth to be active in their schools and communities.
  • Ribyu sa Radyo! - Provides reviews, comments, recommendations, and trivia on films, television shows, music, books, and sports that "keep young minds entertained as much as informed....We also highlight our country's achievements in art and entertainment that are so often overshadowed by foreign influence."
  • Yan Ang Editoryal! - The hosts provide their insights about the episode and read the reactions of the listeners through their text messages and phone calls.
LKTKR also draws on the internet to help support youth activism through the media. The LKTKR page on the VOTY website offers various thinking and talking points - concrete guidance - for young listeners seeking to learn how to use the media to advance their cause. To foster communication between young advocates and the communities reached by their local media, this page provides ideas and strategies for gaining access to the media, framing the issue, organising materials, pitching a story, creating a news release, participating in editorial board meetings, carrying out interviews, and writing letters to the editor.

Partnership with fellow youth media organisations and projects is a key LKTKR strategy. LKTKR pledges to be a part of the upcoming projects and activities of VOTY by providing it with sufficient exposure while welcoming its officers, members, and affiliated youth organisations. LKTKR seeks to connect the youth media of the Philippines to the world by partnering with an organisation that could implement and adopt its line of radio programming in that partner's own country.
