Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This book is intended to help disabled persons in problem-solving and is described as an "idea book" rather than a publication that offers instructions concerning disabilities. It seeks to present a collaborative process of discovery by depicting partnerships between disabled persons and service providers or technicians. One of the book's goals is to demonstrate how effective such partnerships can be compared to assistive equipment which is prescribed or designed.

The book is divided into an Introduction and 6 Parts. Many of the rehabilitation workers and technicians responsible for the content of this book are themselves disabled. It is made up of stories from a community based rehabilitation programme run by disabled villagers in Mexico entitled "Program of Rehabilitation Organized by Disabled Youth of Western Mexico" (PROJIMO). After the main Introduction, there are brief descriptions of some of the members of the PROJIMO team who are in the stories.
