Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

University of Alaska's Breast Cancer Education Programme - Global

This health promotion program was started by nursing students at the University of Alaska in Anchorage in an effort to disseminate accurate information relating to breast cancer to women through an e-mail network. Using e-mail technology and the "Tell a Friend" idea of the American Cancer Society this project is a self-supporting method to increase discussion and screening for breast cancer b women.
Communication Strategies

An e-mail message providing accurate facts and advice on screening and breast cancer is sent to women who then forward it to all of their women friends. Guidelines for discussion and prevention are supplied.
Development Issues

Women, health, education.
Key Points

The four steps provided as a course of action in response to receiving this e-mail are as follow:1. Get Breast screening according to guidelines, 2. Encourage friends and family members to get screened, 3. Pass the word along, 4. Send the co-ordinator an e-mail message for tracking of the health promotion intervention.
