Social norms action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Himalandes Initiative (HI) - South America & South Asia

The Himalandes Initiative (HI) is a project aimed at promoting cooperation between Andean and Himalayan people and organisations.
Communication Strategies

The HI brings together programmes and projects which emphasize the potential for scientific, technological, cultural and commercial cooperation. Focus is on the exchange of experiences and resources in order to promote conservation and sustainable development, especially in rural areas.
Development Issues

Economic development, conservation.
Key Points

These regions share similar social and ecological potentials, problems, and challenges. The HI started in an informal way in 1991 with a group of professionals from the natural and social sciences who wanted to promote and develop experiences resulting from shared interests. Initially, projects focussed on exchange and cooperation in the fields of traditional agriculture and livestock breeding, as well as on conservation and tourism development in mountain national/natural parks. In early 1999 a new phase of the HI was launched with the purpose of strengthening links, identifying new areas for cooperation, and approaching more systematically previous experiences. The HI specially favours those proposals that by their nature and potential impacts, will promote social improvements that may be environmentally sustainable and financially viable.
Partners

Each proposal is gradually developed into a technical project, a process in which all stakeholders take part. In this process the HI coordinates and exchanges information with people and organizations from Himalayan and Andean countries (grassroots organizations, local producers and their organizations, NGOs, universities, private companies, governments), in order to secure their participation from the initial project design to its implementation and later evaluation.
