Viva la Ciudadania - Colombia
Since its beginning back in 1989, the national campaign Viva la Ciudadania (Citizenship Up) back in 1989, it sought to consolidate a process of civil pressure over the political establishment to stimulate profound institutional transformations that could allow proper conditions for stronger democratic processes and greater respect for basic rights.
In doing so, a group of NGOs working behind this initiative decided to face the existing difficulties of the time through a concerted national effort that sought to promote a democratic culture in Colombia leading to the formation of the Viva la Ciudadania campaign. Some of the mechanisms used to achieve this objective included strengthening of democratic habits, practices and life styles.

Communication Strategies
In addition to the publication of 'Tool Box' (which was published monthly), this campaign has used a variety of other communication materials such as print materials, audiovisuals, press releases, and a web site.
Over the past two years, Viva la Ciudadania expanded its editorial work and has produced different materials advocating community participation at a variety of public seminars on issues such as decentralisation; publication of documents on public accountability; the book Building Democracy, which highlights the role of the Constitutional Court in a democratic state; two editions of Papers for Democracy focused on peace-building issues; a bulletin on the Observatory on Drugs; another one about the Amazonic Forum; and the public event Citizen Encounter for Democracy. Viva la Ciudadania also produces radio and TV programmes, which are broadcast on regional and local radio and TV stations.
