Radio Network - Philippines
A local radio network(one primary transmitter and 10 receivers in a 15-25 sq. mile area) is being established in a remote upland forestland of central Mindanao in the Philippines. The network is intended to benefit and empower the indigenous tribal community and migrant people who inhabit, farm and hunt this area at the headwaters of the Pulangi River.
Communication Strategies
The network will be used to help educate local people about health, environmental, social, land use, legal and other issues relevant to their livelihood and survival. Eventually, the goal is to set up a more powerful receiver to bring in radio signals from outside areas, but at this point, the goal is to provide an intra-community network for non-commercial purposes.
Development Issues
Economic development, education, health and nutrition, political development.
Key Points
The central community has no electricity, roads or other means of communication with the outside world, yet it is strategically located at the head of the river and its survival and sustainable management of upland resources is essential to lowland areas downstream. Program coordinator plans to use hydro or solar power for the receiver/transmitters. Coordinator also plans to create and produce a documentary film on the process and experience of setting up this network in this environmentally and culturally significant area.
